GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 comes with core speeds of 589 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6850, which comes with GPU clock speed of 775 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 960 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 210 31 Watts
Radeon HD 6850 127 Watts
Difference: 96 Watts (310%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6850 should be 900% quicker than the GeForce GT 210 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 210 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 115200 (900%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6850 is a lot (approximately 689%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32488 (689%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6850 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22444 (953%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
