Radeon HD 5770 vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The Radeon HD 5770 features core clock speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800(160x5) SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770, which features GPU clock speed of 900 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1050 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 800 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

(No game benchmarks for this combination yet.)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5770 should be 14% quicker than the Radeon HD 6770 overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (14%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 should be a bit (about 6%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2000 (6%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6770 is the winner, though only just barely. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
