Radeon HD 5850 vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5850 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 1440(288x5) SPUs as well as 72 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which features a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1050 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 800 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 108 Watts
Radeon HD 5850 151 Watts
Difference: 43 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 5850 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 128000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 60800 (90%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 is a lot (about 45%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 52200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16200 (45%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 should be quite a bit (about 61%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 23200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8800 (61%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
