GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 comes with clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 1012 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 48 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6750, which features clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 720 SPUs along with 36 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 58 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (48%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6750 should theoretically perform much faster than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Difference: 31616 (98%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 will be quite a bit (approximately 161%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16100 (161%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6750 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6600 (132%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
