GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 has a clock speed of 540 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 700 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5450, which comes with clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 47 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (147%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5450 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (75%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 is a lot (about 66%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3440 (66%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1720 (66%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
