Radeon RX 580 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 580 comes with core speeds of 1257 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1968 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Radeon RX 580 185 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (16%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is much (more or less 39%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon RX 580. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 580 181008 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 70896 (39%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 580, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 580 40224 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85728 (213%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
