GeForce 9800 GTX vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX features a clock frequency of 675 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 1100 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It features 128 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which features GPU clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5120 Stream Processors, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 160 Watts (114%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6900 XT should be much faster than the GeForce 9800 GTX overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 453888 (645%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a lot (about 1252%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 9800 GTX. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 540800 (1252%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6900 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 222800 (2063%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
