GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 has a core clock frequency of 607 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 802 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 352 SPUs, 44 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1717 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (54%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5500 XT should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce GTX 465 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 126784 (124%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT is a lot (approximately 466%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 124388 (466%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 35520 (183%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
