Radeon RX 550 vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 550 has a clock speed of 1100 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It is made up of 512 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1717 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this card. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (160%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should in theory be quite a bit faster than the Radeon RX 550 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 114688 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 329%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115896 (329%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be quite a bit (about 212%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon RX 550, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 37344 (212%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
