GeForce GTX 1070 vs GeForce RTX 2070 Super

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1070 features clock speeds of 1506 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1920 SPUs as well as 120 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1605 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1070 150 Watts
GeForce RTX 2070 Super 215 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (43%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 Super 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 196608 (75%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2070 Super is a lot (approximately 42%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 1070. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 Super 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 180720 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 76080 (42%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2070 Super is a better choice, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 Super 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 96384 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6336 (7%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
