GeForce GTX 1050 Ti vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti has a GPU clock speed of 1290 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 768 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 590, which features a clock frequency of 1469 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 12 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 75 Watts
Radeon RX 590 175 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 590 should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 147456 (129%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 will be quite a bit (approximately 242%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 61920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 149616 (242%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 590 is the winner, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 41280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5728 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
