GeForce RTX 2070 vs Radeon RX 590

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2070 has a clock frequency of 1410 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 12 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 590, which comes with a core clock speed of 1469 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 12 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 2070 should be a lot faster than the Radeon RX 590 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 458752 MB/sec
Radeon RX 590 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 196608 (75%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 590 should be a small bit (about 4%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 2070. (explain)

Radeon RX 590 211536 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 203040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8496 (4%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2070 is quite a bit (approximately 92%) more effective at AA than the Radeon RX 590, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 90240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 590 47008 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 43232 (92%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
