GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 vs GeForce RTX 2070

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 comes with a GPU core speed of 540 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 700 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 32 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 2070, which makes use of a 12 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1410 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific model. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 47 Watts
GeForce RTX 2070 175 Watts
Difference: 128 Watts (272%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 2070 should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 458752 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 436352 (1948%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2070 should be a lot (approximately 2250%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 203040 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 194400 (2250%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2070 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2070 90240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85920 (1989%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
