GeForce GTX 1050 3GB vs GeForce GTX 780 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1050 3GB features clock speeds of 1392 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 768 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 875 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 2880 SPUs as well as 240 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1050 3GB 75 Watts
GeForce GTX 780 Ti 250 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (233%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 3GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 780 Ti 336000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 3GB 86016 MB/sec
Difference: 249984 (291%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 780 Ti will be a lot (approximately 214%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 1050 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 780 Ti 210000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 3GB 66816 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 143184 (214%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 780 Ti is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 780 Ti 42000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 3GB 33408 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8592 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
