GeForce 9800 GT 512MB vs Radeon HD 3850 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB features core clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB, which uses a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 828 MHz on this model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 75 Watts
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB should perform a little bit faster than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 52992 MB/sec
Difference: 4608 (9%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB is a lot (more or less 214%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22912 (214%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3850 1GB is superior to the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1088 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
