Radeon R9 M395X vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The Radeon R9 M395X uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 723 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which comes with a core clock speed of 926 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1650 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
Radeon R9 M395X 125 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (4%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 470 4GB, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R9 M395X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (32%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be a lot (approximately 28%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M395X. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25984 (28%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6496 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
