Radeon HD 3850 1GB vs Radeon HD 4670 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 3850 1GB features core clock speeds of 668 MHz on the GPU, and 828 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 750 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 RAM running at 1100 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 320(64x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 17792 (51%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4670 1GB is quite a bit (more or less 125%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13312 (125%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3850 1GB is superior to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4688 (78%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
