Radeon R9 M270X vs Radeon RX 480 4GB

Intro

The Radeon R9 M270X has a GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 480 4GB, which has GPU core speed of 1120 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2304 Stream Processors, 144 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 480 4GB should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M270X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 480 4GB 229376 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 157376 (219%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 480 4GB will be much (approximately 456%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

Radeon RX 480 4GB 161280 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 132280 (456%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 480 4GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 480 4GB 35840 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24240 (209%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
