Radeon R9 285 vs Radeon R9 M295X

Intro

The Radeon R9 285 features core speeds of 918 MHz on the GPU, and 1375 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M295X, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 750 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1375 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 M295X 125 Watts
Radeon R9 285 190 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 285 will be a little bit (approximately 7%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M295X. (explain)

Radeon R9 285 102816 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M295X 96000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6816 (7%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 285 is superior to the Radeon R9 M295X, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 285 29376 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M295X 24000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5376 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
