Radeon HD 5750 512MB vs Radeon R9 380X

Intro

The Radeon HD 5750 512MB has a core clock speed of 700 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1150 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 720(144x5) SPUs, 36 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 380X, which has core clock speeds of 970 MHz on the GPU, and 1425 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5750 512MB 86 Watts
Radeon R9 380X 190 Watts
Difference: 104 Watts (121%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 380X should be 148% faster than the Radeon HD 5750 512MB in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 380X 182400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5750 512MB 73600 MB/sec
Difference: 108800 (148%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 380X will be quite a bit (more or less 393%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 5750 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 380X 124160 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 512MB 25200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 98960 (393%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 380X should be a lot (about 177%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5750 512MB, and able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 380X 31040 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 512MB 11200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19840 (177%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
