GeForce GT 440 1.5GB vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 1.5GB has a clock speed of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M395X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 723 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1250 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M395X should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 116800 (270%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X will be quite a bit (about 549%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 78288 (549%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X should be quite a bit (approximately 62%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8880 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
