GeForce GTX 285 1GB vs Radeon R9 M385X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 285 1GB makes use of a 55 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 648 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 1242 MHz on this card. It features 240 SPUs along with 80 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M385X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this card. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 285 1GB should be much faster than the Radeon R9 M385X in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 285 1GB 158976 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 62976 (66%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M385X will be just a bit (about 19%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 285 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 285 1GB 51840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9760 (19%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 285 1GB should be a small bit (approximately 18%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M385X, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 285 1GB 20736 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3136 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
