Radeon R9 Fury X vs Radeon R9 M385X

Intro

The Radeon R9 Fury X features a clock speed of 1050 MHz and a HBM memory speed of 500 MHz. It also features a 4096-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M385X, which has GPU core speed of 1100 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 896 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 Fury X should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon R9 M385X in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 416000 (433%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X is quite a bit (more or less 336%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M385X. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 207200 (336%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 Fury X is superior to the Radeon R9 M385X, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 49600 (282%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
