Radeon HD 3870 1GB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 3870 1GB has clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR4 memory. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M380, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M380 should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (33%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be quite a bit (more or less 223%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 27600 (223%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be quite a bit (more or less 29%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (29%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
