Radeon HD 4870 1GB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 4870 1GB has core speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800(160x5) SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M380, which features core speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 4870 1GB should in theory be just a bit superior to the Radeon R9 M380 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 1GB 115200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (20%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is much (about 33%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4870 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 1GB 30000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10000 (33%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 1GB 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4000 (33%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
