Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB comes with a GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M380, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this specific card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M380 is 50% quicker than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (50%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be much (about 156%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24400 (156%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10800 (208%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
