GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M comes with core speeds of 914 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M380, which features a clock speed of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M380 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GTX 950M in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 64000 (200%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is just a bit (more or less 9%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 950M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3440 (9%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is superior to the GeForce GTX 950M, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1376 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
