Radeon R9 280 vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The Radeon R9 280 comes with a GPU core speed of 933 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1250 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also features 1792 Stream Processors, 112 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M375X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1015 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1125 MHz on this particular model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 280 is 233% faster than the Radeon R9 M375X overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 280 240000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 168000 (233%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 280 is quite a bit (more or less 157%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M375X. (explain)

Radeon R9 280 104496 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63896 (157%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 280 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 280 29856 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13616 (84%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
