GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB has core clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5570, which features clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Difference: 62 Watts (144%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5570 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is a lot (more or less 158%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20600 (158%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4400 (85%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
