Radeon R9 M290X vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M290X features clock speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1280 SPUs as well as 80 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which features GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M290X, in theory, should perform much faster than the Radeon R9 M370X in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 153600 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 81600 (113%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M290X will be much (approximately 113%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 68000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 36000 (113%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M290X will be a lot (approximately 113%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M370X, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 27200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14400 (113%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
