GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M features a clock speed of 797 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1152 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M370X should theoretically be just a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 860M in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be a lot (approximately 139%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44512 (139%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X will be a little bit (approximately 0%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 860M, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 48 (0%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
