Radeon R9 M365X vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M365X features a GPU clock speed of 925 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1125 MHz on this specific model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be just a bit (approximately 16%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5000 (16%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is a better choice, but only just. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
