GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 uses a 55 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this model. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which has a clock frequency of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M365X should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 46400 (181%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be a lot (approximately 320%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 28200 (320%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is superior to the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10400 (236%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
