GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) makes use of a 80 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 540 MHz. The DDR2 memory works at a frequency of 400 MHz on this particular card. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features core clock speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M365X should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 59200 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be a lot (more or less 328%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 28360 (328%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10480 (243%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
