Radeon HD 5570 vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 5570 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 650 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M365X, which has a clock speed of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M365X should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5570 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 43200 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be much (more or less 185%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24000 (185%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9600 (185%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
