GeForce 8600 GTS vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS comes with clock speeds of 675 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features GPU clock speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8600 GTS, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 should be quite a bit (approximately 150%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16200 (150%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 is much (about 67%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GTS, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (67%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
