GeForce 940M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with a clock speed of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features a core clock frequency of 1125 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 will be just a bit (approximately 5%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1272 (5%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 should be just a bit (about 5%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 940M, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 424 (5%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
