Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 250X 2GB

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 comes with a GPU core speed of 1030 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 250X 2GB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R7 250X 2GB should in theory be much superior to the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB is quite a bit (approximately 94%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19400 (94%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB will be quite a bit (about 94%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R5 M330, and able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7760 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
