Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 features a GPU clock speed of 1030 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 715 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M260 should be a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 is a bit (more or less 20%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3440 (20%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M330 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2520 (44%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
