Radeon HD 4770 vs Radeon HD 4850 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4770 comes with a core clock speed of 750 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4850 1GB, which features GPU core speed of 625 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR4 RAM set to run at 993 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 110 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4850 1GB should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 4770 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 1GB 63552 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 12352 (24%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4850 1GB will be a small bit (approximately 4%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4770. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 1GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1000 (4%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4770 is the winner, though only just barely. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (20%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
