GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 vs GeForce GTX 860M

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 features clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 860M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 797 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 1152 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 50 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (11%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 860M should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (150%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M is much (about 769%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 67712 (769%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 860M is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8352 (190%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
