GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon HD 5870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M comes with core speeds of 876 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5870, which has a clock speed of 850 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1200 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 1600(320x5) SPUs, 80 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 850M 40 Watts
Radeon HD 5870 188 Watts
Difference: 148 Watts (370%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5870 should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 850M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 153600 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 121600 (380%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 should be much (approximately 94%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 850M. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 68000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32960 (94%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 is quite a bit (approximately 94%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 850M, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13184 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
