GeForce 830M vs GeForce 9600 GT 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU core clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB, which has core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 64 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 95 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (280%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 830M in general. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 43200 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB will be a lot (about 26%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 20800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4336 (26%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 10400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2168 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
