GeForce 830M vs Radeon HD 4670 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with a GPU core speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 256 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, which comes with a core clock speed of 750 MHz and a GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 320(64x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 70 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (180%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4670 1GB is 144% faster than the GeForce 830M overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 20800 (144%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4670 1GB should be a lot (approximately 46%) better at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7536 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is superior to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, by far. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2232 (37%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
