GeForce 830M vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with a GPU clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 256 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5450, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 650 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce 830M 25 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (32%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 830M will be 13% faster than the Radeon HD 5450 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (13%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 830M will be much (approximately 217%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11264 (217%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5632 (217%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
