GeForce 830M vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce 830M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1029 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 256 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M260X, which has core speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R7 M260X should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X should be a bit (approximately 20%) better at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3336 (20%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is superior to the Radeon R7 M260X, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1632 (25%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
