GeForce 825M vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The GeForce 825M has a clock frequency of 850 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M230, which features a core clock speed of 780 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R5 M230 should perform a bit faster than the GeForce 825M overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 is a bit (about 15%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2000 (15%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 825M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3680 (118%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
