GeForce 825M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 825M has core speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with GPU core speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R5 M255 should in theory be just a bit better than the GeForce 825M overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be a lot (approximately 38%) better at AF than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5200 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is a better choice, but only just. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 720 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
