GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon R9 M290X

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 comes with a core clock speed of 589 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 16 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M290X, which comes with a clock frequency of 850 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1200 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1280 SPUs, 80 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GT 210 31 Watts
Radeon R9 M290X 100 Watts
Difference: 69 Watts (223%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M290X should be much faster than the GeForce GT 210 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 153600 MB/sec
GeForce GT 210 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 140800 (1100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M290X should be much (about 1343%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 68000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63288 (1343%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M290X is superior to the GeForce GT 210, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24844 (1054%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
