Radeon HD 7790 vs Radeon R9 M280X

Intro

The Radeon HD 7790 has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M280X, which has a clock speed of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1375 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 896 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Radeon R9 M280X 75 Watts
Radeon HD 7790 85 Watts
Difference: 10 Watts (13%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7790 should perform a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M280X overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 88000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (9%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7790 is a bit (about 11%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M280X. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5600 (11%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7790 should be a bit (more or less 11%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M280X, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M280X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
